Schocopee School House

The Schocopee School originally stood 1.5 miles west of its present location in Apple Valley Village. It originally stood at the intersection of Fire Tower and Schocopee Road. Schocopee Road was once a well-known and traveled Indian Trail. It is said that “Schocopee” translates to “straight path” in the language of the Lenape; Algonquin. Some sources suggest the school was in operation as early as 1830, though the only deed ever located for the property is dated 1866.

The building was moved to its current location in 1977-78 and was donated to the Pike County Historical Society by Kenneth W. and Carol J. Greening. The building holds many nostalgic memories and the pot-bellied stove, desks, and “black boards” and teachers’ desks are all original.
