Highlights from our Permanent Exhibits

  • Lincoln Flag

    This large 36-star flag was used to cushion Abraham Lincoln's head after he was shot at Ford's Theater on April 14th, 1865. Stained with the blood of the 16th President of the United States, the Lincoln Flag is a national treasure.

  • Jeannie Gourlay

    Jeannie Gourlay was an actress in the play being performed on the night of President Lincoln's assassination. She brought the Lincoln Flag to Milford in 1888. Her son donated the flag and several of her stage costumes to the museum in 1954.

  • Chief Thundercloud

    Chief Thundercloud - also known as Dominique LaPlante - was an Indian model who posed for the likes of Frederick Remington and Francis Millet. He resided in Dingmans Ferry for many years. The museum has a study of Thundercloud painted by Millet.

  • Lenape Indians

    The museum worked with members of three federally recognized tribes of Lenape Indians to create a tribute to the original people of Lenapehoking. "Reconciling the Past, Embracing the Future" tells the story of the Lenape Indians from occupation to removal.

  • War Veterans

    The museum has an impressive collection of military memorabilia and artifacts including war bond posters, weaponry and uniforms representative of all military branches and conflicts.

  • Father Francis Craft

    Father Francis Craft was the liaison between the Army and Sioux Indians in the months leading up to the Battle of Wounded Knee. He ministered to the Sioux and started an order of Indian nurses and nuns known as The Sioux Sisters.

  • Davis-Bailey Family

    The Davis-Bailey Family Exhibit represents four generations of a black family that lived in Milford from 1900- 1990. They eventually broke down the racial barriers which existed at the time, which could not have been easy. Milton Wesley Bailey was killed in action in the Korean War. The museum houses the family photograph collection and the letters Milton sent home while proudly serving his country.

  • Charles & Juliette Peirce

    Charles Saunders Peirce was a philosopher and mathematician who resided near Milford. He is credited with introducing the theory of Pragmatism to the world. His wife, Madame Juliette Peirce, his second wife, is a woman shrouded in mystery who is rumored to haunt the museum.
