Ten-Hut!  Annual Civil War Encampment Returns May 10th with President Lincoln in Camp

Our friends from Company G of the 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry will once again set up camp on our grounds and share their memories of the regiment's brave men through re-enactment and living history.

The 142nd PVI Co. G reenacting group was founded in the Spring of 1991.  The original soldiers valiantly fought between August 1862 and May 1865.  The regiment primarily served in the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theater and was heavily engaged in the first day of fighting at Gettysburg.  The regiment was originally organized with Robert P. Cummins as colonel and sent to Washington D.C. where the troops built fortifications.  Shortly thereafter the regiment was sent to Frederick, MD where the regiment performed garrison duties.  In October of 1862 it became part of the 2nd Brigade of Pennsylvania Reserves.  At the Battle of Fredericksburg, the regiment formed part of the force which briefly pierced the Confederate right, losing 250 of 550 men.

The remaining men were reassigned to the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, I Corps and fought several battles in Gettysburg.  They were outflanked by Confederate North Carolina Divisions and only 140 men made it back to Union lines.  Colonel Cummins was among the mortally wounded, along with other officers.  The regiment was mustered out on May 29, 1865.

The re-enactors who represent the Stroudsburg based 142nd PVI do this to honor these brave soldiers.

The Encampment will take place on Saturday May 10th from 10am to 3pm.  Admission to the event is $15 and includes museum admission.  Abraham Lincoln will be in Camp and will address the troops at 1pm.  There will be demonstrations, drills, displays and exhibits which will depict the life of a soldier in the Civil War.  Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the event at our famous "Cannonball Cafe" between 11:30 and 2:30.

Children under 10 are free. This event will take place rain or shine!  For more info please contact the museum at 570-296-8126 or email pikemuse@ptd.net
