The Pike County Historical Society will host the Smoky Joe Softball Soiree on Sunday July 5th at the Milford Little League Field on East Catherine Street. Players ages 15 and up are welcome to play in the fun filled game - which will feature live play by play, live organ music and hot dogs and soft drinks courtesy of the Pike County Historical Society in celebration of America 250!
The game will commence at 11:30am with a ceremonial first pitch and the singing of our National Anthem.
Joe Wood was one of the most dominating pitchers in baseball history. In 1912 Joe co-led the league with 16 straight wins, and led the Bo-Sox to a world series win. He earned the nickname "Smoky Joe" because of his blazing fastball. Wood recounted in the seminal 1966 book The Glory of Their Times, "I threw so hard I thought my arm would fly right off my body." Joe spent much time on his beloved farm in Shohola, and enjoyed the sporting life in Pike County's wilds - an avid hunter and fisherman. The Historical Society is proud to celebrate Smoky Joe and has held softball games in the past where a good time was had by all during this fun nod to America's favorite pass time and a great local legend.
Players can sign up by emailing pikemuse@ptd.net or contacting the PCHS at 570-296-8126. You must supply your own mitt and sign a waiver to play. This is a fun and casual game of 9 innings - (we wouldn't want to miss the 7th inning stretch medley and sing along!) May the best team win! Come to play or come to watch - either way you are guaranteed a good time!
